Yew Hedges in a Victorian Garden

Edwards Garden Services has recently finished the hedge cutting of the complex of Yews at Barrow Court in North Somerset.

The original hedges were planted in 1896, part of the formal layout of this Elizabethan inspired Victorian garden.

Other Yew hedges on site are still the original plants and we have been involved in their restoration and maintenance for a number of years now. Keeping Yew hedges trim and to a particular shape does require some attention to detail and here in the mild south west, two trims a year. This picture below, from the Avon Gardens Trust archive shows how Yew can grow beyond its allotd space quite quickly.

Some some work on detailing the ‘gothic arch’ alcoves and thats it until next June.

Other hedges we look after can be seen here.
